Chapter Twenty-Two

The next day on his drive into work Brad dialed Leo. “Why the hell did you call my home?” Brad yelled into the receiver.

“I couldn’t reach you at the office,” Leo Caelan answered.

“Not true. I was at work all day, or you could have called my cell phone. You want Monica to know about this.”

“It’s not the worst idea,” Leo replied. “Either way you need to know that Jeff changed his mind.”

“That’s just terrific. And now I’m supposed to come to the rescue?” Brad’s pulse raced. “Forget about that happening.”

“Calm down,” Leo said.

“You’re working behind the scenes with Wendy to guilt me into adopting Bella.” Brad regretted his choice of words as soon as he said them. If he thought there was the slimmest chance Monica would accept Bella into their life, he would embrace the idea.

“That’s not entirely true.”

“I don’t believe you,” Brad said.

“Bella is already your daughter legally.” Leo threw another dagger into Brad’s heart.

“Did you talk Jeff out of the adoption?”

“Of course not.”

“Then how did you know this would happen?”

“I’ve been in this business a long time. People change their minds. Especially when it’s not their blood relative,” Leo explained. “I know you want this to tie up neatly so you can move on, but seriously you need to rethink your game.”

“Just what part of my game should I rethink?” Sarcasm seeped through every word, but Brad didn’t care. He didn’t like the way this guy manipulated him. Brad had honored his end of the agreement with Samantha. Bella would be adopted by a nice, childless couple and have a wonderful life. And he could go back to Monica and the boys.

“The part that sends your daughter to foster care.”

“Foster care? She’s staying with Wendy, right?”

“For now, but Wendy isn’t her guardian, and she’s not an approved foster care home. Once you relinquish your rights to Bella, the child becomes a ward of the state and is put into a foster home.”

This was getting out of hand. Why the hell didn’t Jeff adopt Bella? Why did Sam have to die? Why did I cheat on Monica?

“Brad? Are you there?”

“Yeah, I’m here.” Brad parked the car and turned off the ignition. There would be no easy solution. “Why didn’t you explain these complications to me when I was in New Mexico?”

“Because all you wanted to hear about was Bella being adopted by Jeff. I outlined the alternatives. You didn’t want to consider them.”

“I cannot adopt … I mean raise Bella. This probably sounds heartless to you. I don’t mean to sound cruel, but bringing her into my home will not only destroy my life but my wife’s and the lives of my four sons. My youngest son is very sick.”

“I know. Wendy told me.”

“I can’t add anything else to the pile.”

“Bella isn’t a thing.”

Brad cringed at the disdain in Leo’s tone. “I don’t mean her. I mean the circumstances that come with her. My wife and I are finally repairing the damage from the affair. That is until you called my house.
